Where to Stay in Meganisi: Vathy, Spartochori or Katomeri?

Meganisi is small enough that choosing where to stay isn’t about being close to dozens of major attractions.

Instead, the decision comes down to the type of Greek island holiday you want.

The three principal villages offer quite different experiences:

Vathy is best for waterfront restaurants, harbour atmosphere and being able to walk out for dinner.

Spartochori offers a more traditional village setting, elevated views and easy access to Spilia harbour.

Katomeri, the island’s capital, feels more residential and central and is a good base for travellers who want to explore different parts of Meganisi.

There are also villas and apartments beside beaches and in quieter countryside locations if privacy matters more than village convenience. Meganisi’s official accommodation directory lists everything from small apartments and studios to resorts, boutique hotels and private-pool villas across the island.

For most first-time visitors, I would narrow the choice to Vathy or Spartochori.

1. Vathy – Best Overall Place to Stay

If you’re visiting Meganisi for the first time and aren’t sure where to base yourself, I’d probably choose Vathy.

The village surrounds a sheltered harbour and combines traditional fishing-port character with restaurants, cafés and accommodation. The island’s official tourism organisation describes Vathy as retaining its traditional character despite its popularity with sailors.

Its biggest advantage becomes obvious every evening:

you can walk to dinner.

That’s particularly valuable on an island where eating beside the water is one of the pleasures of the trip.

Who Should Stay in Vathy?

I’d particularly recommend Vathy for:

first-time visitors
couples
travellers without a car
people who enjoy eating out
short stays
anyone who likes harbour atmosphere

If you’re spending only three nights on Meganisi, Vathy makes things easy.

Accommodation in Vathy

There’s considerably more variety than you might expect from such a small island.

Vathy Studios

For travellers who primarily want a convenient village base, Vathy Studios are directly associated with the port area and offer port views. The official Meganisi directory lists breakfast, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and daily cleaning among the facilities.

This is the kind of accommodation I’d consider when location matters more than resort facilities.

Villa Lydia

Villa Lydia provides another interesting Vathy option, particularly for travellers who want more facilities.

The official directory lists a seasonal pool, kitchenette facilities, parking and views towards Skorpios, while still allowing guests to walk towards Vathy’s waterfront restaurants and cafés.

Azur Retreat

At the more luxurious end, Azur Retreat is listed as an 18-suite property with a pool, spa, fitness centre and restaurant.

That makes it a different proposition from staying in a simple village apartment.

I’d consider this style of accommodation for a special occasion or resort-style stay.

Keromoussi

Another higher-end option is Keromoussi, an adults-only seaside boutique hotel on a private peninsula less than 2 km from Vathy.

This could suit couples wanting greater privacy while remaining relatively close to Vathy.

2. Spartochori – Best for Traditional Village Atmosphere

My second choice for most visitors would be Spartochori.

The village sits above the sea, with whitewashed houses, narrow lanes and views across the surrounding Ionian islands. Below it is the harbour of Spilia, popular with visiting boats and yachts.

Spartochori feels more like the image many travellers have in mind when imagining a small Greek island village.

You can wander through the village, have dinner in a taverna and walk down towards the water.

Who Should Stay in Spartochori?

I’d choose it for:

traditional village character
views
couples
walking
travellers wanting somewhere quieter than Vathy

It also makes sense if you’re arriving through Spilia.

Accommodation in Spartochori

There is a surprisingly broad range.

Lakis Apartments

Lakis Apartments are only around 100 metres from Spartochori’s main square, where you’ll find tavernas, cafés and mini-markets.

The apartments have kitchens and private balconies, and the official listing puts Spilia’s beach and port roughly 0.6 miles away.

This is exactly the sort of property I’d look at for an independent village stay.

Asteria Apartments

Asteria Apartments are also in central Spartochori and offer one- and two-bedroom self-catering accommodation.

The island’s official accommodation directory specifically positions them for travellers wanting to stay within the traditional village.

Asteria Villas

For families or groups wanting more space, the related Asteria Villas provide two- and three-bedroom villas with private pools and sea views.

That illustrates one of Meganisi’s strengths: you don’t necessarily have to choose between village atmosphere and a private villa.

Esperides Resort Hotel

If you prefer a conventional hotel, Esperides Resort is a four-star property approximately 500 metres from Spartochori.

The official directory lists 48 rooms plus two suites, along with a pool and views towards Skorpios.

This may suit travellers who want hotel facilities while remaining close to a traditional village.

Holiday House

For something smaller, Holiday House consists of three apartments in Spartochori, each accommodating up to four people.

The official tourism site places it around five minutes from Spilia port and Agios Ioannis Beach.

3. Katomeri – Best for a More Local Base

Katomeri is Meganisi’s capital and administrative centre.

It sits inland rather than around a harbour, which gives it a different atmosphere from Vathy and Spilia.

The official tourism organisation describes Katomeri as a traditional hill village with narrow streets, stone houses and views towards Atherinos Bay.

I’d particularly consider Katomeri if you’re hiring a car or scooter and intend to explore the island independently.

Who Should Stay in Katomeri?

Katomeri works particularly well for:

longer stays
independent travellers
people hiring transport
travellers wanting a more residential atmosphere
access to different sides of the island

You’re trading waterfront atmosphere for a more central location.

Accommodation in Katomeri

Hotel Meganisi

Hotel Meganisi is probably the most straightforward hotel option here.

It’s a family-run 30-room hotel on the edge of Katomeri with a pool and views towards Atherinos Bay. The hotel also operates a free minibus to Fanari Beach during high season, according to the official tourism listing.

Interestingly, the listing says Vathy is around a 10-minute walk, giving this location some of the advantages of both villages.

Mentis Apartments

For self-catering, Mentis Apartments has nine apartments for two to five guests on the outskirts of Katomeri.

The property is approximately 2 km from both Vathy port and Fanari Beach and is within walking distance of tavernas, shops, a bakery and other village services.

That makes it a practical base rather than simply somewhere picturesque to sleep.

Villas Meganisi

Groups wanting more privacy can consider properties such as Villas Meganisi, a collection of traditional-style stone villas with private pools, kitchens and panoramic sea views.

Private villas are an important part of Meganisi’s accommodation market, so Katomeri becomes particularly interesting for families and groups.

4. Stay Beside a Beach

You don’t necessarily need to stay in one of the three villages.

Meganisi has accommodation scattered around its coastline.

This changes the nature of the holiday considerably.

Instead of:

walk out → café → restaurant → harbour

you get:

wake up → sea → swim → relax.

For some travellers that’s exactly the point of coming to Meganisi.

Elia Beach

The official accommodation directory lists Elia Village and Paradise Studios around Elia Beach on the Katomeri side of the island.

This area makes sense if swimming and tranquillity matter more than nightlife or restaurant choice.

Agios Ioannis

Around Agios Ioannis Beach, there are seaside apartments including Gavrilis Apartments and Il Paradiso.

This could be an excellent option for someone whose ideal Meganisi day begins with walking straight into the sea.

The compromise is that you’ll probably appreciate having transport.

5. Stay in a Private Villa

Meganisi has an unusually strong villa market for its size.

The official accommodation directory contains numerous private-pool villas around Spartochori, Katomeri and more secluded parts of the island.

I’d consider a villa particularly for:

families
two couples travelling together
groups of friends
week-long stays
travellers who value privacy

Once several people share the cost, a villa can also become more economically attractive relative to booking multiple hotel rooms.

A car becomes much more useful if the villa is outside a village.

Vathy vs Spartochori

This is probably the decision most first-time visitors will face.

I’d simplify it to:

Choose Vathy if you want:

restaurants
cafés
harbour activity
evening walks
convenience
less dependence on transport

Choose Spartochori if you want:

traditional village atmosphere
elevated views
quieter evenings
access to Spilia
a more residential Greek-island feel

Neither is a bad choice.

For a first three-night visit, I’d lean towards Vathy.

For a slower four-to-seven-night holiday, Spartochori becomes particularly attractive.

Vathy vs Katomeri

This decision is easier.

Choose Vathy if your priority is the holiday atmosphere.

Choose Katomeri if your priority is having a practical base for exploring.

Katomeri also makes sense for travellers who want to experience something closer to everyday Meganisi life rather than staying directly beside a yacht harbour.

Should You Stay Near the Beach?

Only if that’s genuinely how you want to spend the holiday.

Being able to walk to the water is wonderful.

But remember what you’re giving up:

restaurant choice,
evening atmosphere,
shops
and easy village life.

For someone planning to rent a car, that’s not much of a problem.

Without transport, I’d generally favour Vathy or Spartochori.

Where Should Couples Stay?

I’d choose between Vathy and Spartochori.

Vathy gives you waterfront dinners and evening atmosphere.

Spartochori gives you views, village character and quieter surroundings.

For a honeymoon or special trip, the island also has adults-only and luxury boutique accommodation around Vathy as well as numerous private-pool villas.

Where Should Families Stay?

Families have more options than they might initially expect.

I’d look at:

Spartochori apartments for village convenience,

Katomeri for a central base,

or a private villa if staying for a week.

The official accommodation directory includes numerous two- and three-bedroom villas and apartments accommodating four to seven guests.

Where Should You Stay Without a Car?

My first choice would be Vathy.

Restaurants and cafés are concentrated around the harbour, so you can enjoy evenings without worrying about transport.

Spartochori is my second choice, particularly if you don’t mind walking between the village and Spilia.

I’d be more cautious about isolated beach accommodation or remote villas without a vehicle.

Where Should You Stay for Restaurants?

Definitely Vathy.

This is one of the clearest decisions on Meganisi.

If your ideal evening involves walking along the harbour and choosing somewhere to eat spontaneously, base yourself there.

Where Should You Stay for Beaches?

There isn’t one obvious beach resort on Meganisi.

If beaches are your priority, I’d actually choose accommodation based on transport access rather than one particular village.

Staying around Elia or Agios Ioannis puts the sea close to your door, while Katomeri provides relatively central access to different beaches.

How Long Should You Stay in Meganisi?

For most first visits:

2 nights: short introduction
3–4 nights: ideal for most visitors
5–7 nights: excellent for a genuinely relaxing holiday

For only two nights, stay somewhere convenient such as Vathy.

For a week, I’d be much more tempted by a villa, beach property or Spartochori.

Do You Need to Book Meganisi Accommodation Early?

For peak summer, I would.

Meganisi is physically small and doesn’t have the enormous accommodation inventory of islands such as Corfu or Crete.

The official tourism directory also shows that many properties operate primarily between May and October, with some having even shorter summer seasons.

That makes early booking particularly sensible if you want:

a specific villa,
a sea view,
a pool,
a particular village
or accommodation for a larger family/group.

Where Would I Stay on a First Visit?

I’d choose Vathy.

Not because it’s necessarily the prettiest part of Meganisi, but because it makes a first visit easy.

You can explore during the day and return to somewhere where you can:

walk around the harbour,
have a drink,
choose a restaurant
and enjoy the evening without getting back into a car.

On a second visit, I’d be more tempted by Spartochori or a quiet villa near the coast.

Final Thoughts

There really isn’t a wrong village to stay in on Meganisi.

The important thing is matching the location to your style of travel.

Choose Vathy for restaurants, convenience and harbour atmosphere.

Choose Spartochori for traditional character, views and a slower village experience.

Choose Katomeri for a central, more local base.

Choose a beach property for swimming and tranquillity.

Choose a villa for privacy, space and a longer stay.

For most first-time visitors, though, I’d narrow the search to Vathy versus Spartochori.

That’s the choice that will have the greatest effect on how your Meganisi holiday feels.
