Telendos is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Dodecanese, but unlike some tiny Greek islands, it has a surprisingly useful selection of places to stay.

Accommodation is small-scale. You won’t find sprawling resorts or large international hotels. Instead, Telendos offers small hotels, suites, studios and holiday homes, most within walking distance of the waterfront, tavernas and beaches.

Because the island is completely car-free, location is refreshingly simple. Arrive by boat from Myrties, walk to your accommodation and forget about transport for the rest of your stay.

Here are some of the best places to stay in Telendos.

1. Pefki Luxury Suites

Best for: a higher-end stay

Pefki Luxury Suites is one of the more upmarket accommodation choices on Telendos.

This would be one of my first choices for travellers who want to spend several nights on Telendos rather than simply use their accommodation as somewhere to sleep.

Suites Dream Telendos offers apartment-style accommodation in a quiet setting on the island.

The combination of outdoor space and self-contained accommodation makes it particularly useful if you’re staying for several days.

It’s also close enough to the village that restaurants, the waterfront and beaches can be reached on foot.

Of course, that’s true of almost everything on Telendos.

One of the pleasures of staying here is never having to think about getting a taxi back to your accommodation after dinner.

3. Hotel Porto Potha

Best for: a traditional hotel stay

Hotel Porto Potha is one of the most established accommodation options on Telendos.

It’s particularly interesting because Telendos doesn’t have many conventional hotels.

The property has a swimming pool and offers breakfast, making it a good choice for travellers who prefer some hotel facilities rather than completely independent accommodation.

Rooms and balconies take advantage of the island setting, while Potha Beach is nearby.

If you’re travelling during the warmer months and like the idea of alternating between swimming in the sea and relaxing beside a pool, Porto Potha is worth considering.

4. Afrodite Luxury Rooms

Best for: stylish rooms close to island life

Afrodite Luxury Rooms provides another more contemporary accommodation option on Telendos.

It’s a good choice for travellers who want the simplicity of a room rather than a larger holiday house.

The location allows you to experience Telendos exactly as you should: on foot.

Walk to the waterfront for breakfast, spend the morning swimming, return to your room during the hottest part of the afternoon and head out again for dinner.

There is no need to organise your day around transport.

5. Theros Telendos

Best for: a romantic self-contained stay

Theros is a renovated holiday home that works particularly well for couples wanting privacy.

Rather than staying in a traditional hotel room, you have a self-contained base from which to explore the island.

Hohlakas Beach is nearby, making this particularly attractive if swimming and sunset are priorities.

A holiday home also makes sense for travellers staying more than a couple of nights who appreciate having their own space.

6. Kalotina’s House

Best for: a simple island house

Kalotina’s House is another self-contained option on Telendos.

The property offers sea views and outdoor space and is within a short walk of Hohlakas Beach.

This style of accommodation suits Telendos particularly well.

You’re not travelling here for room service and extensive resort facilities. You’re coming to live at the pace of a tiny Greek island for a few days.

Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Telendos?

Unlike larger Greek islands, Telendos doesn’t require a complicated discussion about neighbourhoods.

The inhabited part of the island is tiny.

Most accommodation is within walking distance of the harbour, tavernas and beaches, and there are no cars.

Your choice should therefore depend more on the type of accommodation you want than on which district to choose.

If you want easy access to restaurants and the boat to Kalymnos, stay close to the waterfront settlement.

If swimming and sunset are higher priorities, accommodation towards Hohlakas can be particularly attractive.

Staying Near Potha Beach

Potha is one of Telendos’s most accessible beaches and is only a short walk from the settlement.

Staying around this part of the island gives you easy access to swimming while keeping the harbour and restaurants within walking distance.

Hotel Porto Potha is the obvious accommodation choice if you specifically want to base yourself near Potha.

This area works particularly well for visitors who want a straightforward beach holiday without needing transport.

Staying Near Hohlakas Beach

The western side of Telendos offers a different atmosphere.

Hohlakas faces towards the open Aegean rather than back towards Kalymnos and is particularly attractive around sunset.

Several of the island’s self-contained accommodation options are within easy walking distance.

I’d consider this side of Telendos if you value tranquillity and sunset more than being immediately beside the harbour.

The distances remain small enough that you can still walk to dinner.

How Long Should You Stay in Telendos?

You can see Telendos on a day trip from Kalymnos, but staying overnight provides a much better understanding of the island.

I’d suggest two or three nights for most travellers.

That gives you time to explore the village, swim at several beaches, visit the early Christian ruins, walk around the island and enjoy evenings after many of the day visitors have returned to Kalymnos.

Climbers may want considerably longer.

Telendos has climbing routes of its own and also provides easy access to the extensive climbing areas around neighbouring Kalymnos.

Is Telendos Good for Couples?

Very much so.

The island’s combination of car-free streets, beaches, waterfront tavernas and sunsets makes it particularly suited to couples looking for somewhere quiet.

There’s very little pressure to spend the day sightseeing.

Walk to a beach in the morning, have a long lunch beside the water, relax during the afternoon and head out again for sunset and dinner.

It’s an uncomplicated holiday.

Is Telendos Good for Families?

It can be, particularly for families comfortable with a small, quiet island.

The absence of traffic is an obvious advantage, and beaches and restaurants are within walking distance.

However, Telendos doesn’t offer the extensive entertainment, shopping and resort facilities found in larger destinations.

Families wanting lots of organised activities may prefer to stay on Kalymnos and visit Telendos for the day.

Is Telendos Good for Climbers?

Yes.

Kalymnos is internationally known for rock climbing, and Telendos has climbing sectors of its own.

Staying on Telendos can therefore provide an appealing combination of climbing and a very quiet base.

Just remember that everything you bring onto Telendos ultimately needs to travel with you by boat and then on foot.

Pack accordingly.

Should You Stay in Telendos or Myrties?

This is probably the most important accommodation decision.

Myrties is directly across the channel on Kalymnos and offers more accommodation, shops, transport and services.

Telendos offers tranquillity, no traffic and the experience of actually staying on a tiny island.

Choose Myrties if convenience and easy access to the rest of Kalymnos are priorities.

Choose Telendos if waking up on a car-free island is part of what you want from the trip.

You can easily visit one from the other.

Should You Stay in Telendos or Massouri?

Massouri is one of the main tourism centres on Kalymnos and has a much larger choice of hotels, restaurants and services.

It’s also particularly convenient for climbers.

Telendos is the quieter alternative.

If you want nightlife, lots of restaurants and easy road access around Kalymnos, choose Massouri.

If you want evenings without cars and a small waterfront village, choose Telendos.

Do You Need a Car?

No.

Telendos is car-free.

You walk from the harbour to your accommodation and then walk everywhere else.

For many travellers, that’s one of the island’s greatest attractions.

You don’t need to think about parking, buses, taxis or rental vehicles for the duration of your stay.

Comfortable shoes are considerably more useful than car keys.

Should You Book Accommodation in Advance?

Yes, particularly for July and August.

Telendos receives nowhere near the visitor numbers of Greece’s major islands, but it also has a limited amount of accommodation.

That means the best properties can fill without the island ever feeling particularly crowded.

Booking ahead is also sensible if you’re travelling specifically to stay on Telendos rather than being happy to fall back on accommodation across the water in Kalymnos.

What If Telendos Is Fully Booked?

Stay in Myrties or Massouri on Kalymnos.

Myrties is the most convenient alternative because boats to Telendos leave from there and the crossing takes only a few minutes.

You can then visit Telendos during the day and return to Kalymnos in the evening.

It’s not quite the same as waking up on Telendos, but it’s an extremely easy alternative.

Final Thoughts

Telendos has a better selection of accommodation than you might expect from such a tiny island.

Choose Pefki Luxury Suites or Suites Dream Telendos if you want something more contemporary.

Consider Hotel Porto Potha if you prefer a traditional hotel with facilities such as breakfast and a swimming pool.

Look at Afrodite Luxury Rooms for a comfortable room-based stay.

And consider Theros, Kalotina’s House, Peter’s Paradise or Studio Telendos if you’d rather have independent accommodation.

But the biggest decision isn’t really which property you choose.

It’s whether you stay on Telendos at all.

A day trip gives you the beaches and village.

An overnight stay gives you the quiet evenings, sunset, waterfront dinners and car-free mornings that make Telendos genuinely different.
