The best places to eat in Skiathos are not only the traditional tavernas but also more elevated restaurants (in some cases literally). They feature stunning sea views and delicious home-made dishes.
It is a tavern that serves delicious traditional food such as taramosalata, prawns with garlic mustard sauce, moussaka and others. It is one of the most popular taverns on the island.
1. O Mpates
This is one of the most popular restaurants in Skiathos, with great views and a good atmosphere. The food is very good, especially the seafood. The service is also good. The only negative thing is that it is a bit expensive but I guess this is the case with most restaurants in Skiathos.
This family-run tavern offers a range of dishes, from traditional Greek meals to more sophisticated options. You can try lamb and chicken, as well as fish dishes from the grill. The menu is large and varied and there are plenty of options for vegetarians. The restaurant is very friendly and the staff are helpful.
You can enjoy good-value food in a charming setting at 1901, which is set in a beautiful old house with tables outside and under trees draped with fairy lights. This is a slightly smarter take on the traditional taverna and the menu has some interesting twists, including rabbit cooked in dessert wine from Samos and sea bass in papillote. The menu also includes some Italian dishes and homemade pastas.
A great choice for a night out with friends. Good atmosphere and great view of the old port. The food is delicious and the service is great. We had a lovely evening and would definitely return!
2. Porto Paradiso
A beautiful restaurant overlooking the beach, Porto Paradiso is a delightful spot to dine and relax. This restaurant has an extensive menu featuring grilled meats, seafood, and other Mediterranean cuisine. In addition, the restaurant is known for its fresh salads and delicious cocktails. The atmosphere is perfect for socializing and spending time with friends and family.
The restaurant is in a traditional house with tables outside and in the garden surrounded by trees. It is the most romantic place in Skiathos, especially in the evening when you can see the city lights and watch ships entering and leaving the port. The food is good but the best thing about this restaurant is its service. The waiters and the barman are very kind and they treat you like friends.
This is a great place to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is located on the small peninsula separating the old town from the new port and has a beautiful view of the sea. They have a large selection of Greek dishes and also offer vegetarian options. They are always busy but the service is very fast and the food is excellent.
The food was amazing the service very good and it is a great place to go for lunch. The staff are very friendly and they look after you very well the barman Dean is fantastic he makes the best cocktails and has a great sense of humor. The food was very tasty and we had biftaki and lamb (not a fan of lamb but this was amazing it was so tender it fell apart itself with no fat or bad smell). The prices are fair for the quality of the food and the location.
3. Bourtzi Cafe
This restaurant is a gem. It is located in the old town above the harbor, just by the Bourtzi fortress. It is a lovely spot to sit, eat and watch the ships and planes. The food is amazing – traditional Greek cuisine with some modern flair, and the atmosphere is very comfortable and welcoming. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner (we have tried all three). The doughnut balls are a must-have!
The owners of this place have really put a lot of love and effort into this restaurant. The food is very tasty and they serve a nice variety of dishes, including fish. They also have great prices. They are also very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be going back to this place again!
Nikos Dimos
This restaurant, run by a family, is one of the best-kept secrets in Skiathos. It is hidden away up above the harbour and offers some beautiful views of the sea. It is very much a taverna style restaurant, but with a few international twists, such as chicken curry. They offer a menu with something for everyone, from meat-lovers to vegetarians. A must-try is their langoustines with courgettes, and the dentex ’stifado’. You can also try some of their wines, all of which are reasonably priced for this part of the world.
4. O Megas Gialos
The quaint seaside village of Megas Gialos is home to stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a charming village center. It is a great place for travelers who are looking for a quiet and relaxing retreat, and it is also a perfect location for those who want to experience the local culture and cuisine. Megas Gialos is located on the southern coast of Syros and can be accessed by car or taxi. There are a variety of accommodation options available in the village, including the Agnadi Syros Beachfront Studios & Rooms and Hotel Alkyon.
The main attraction of Megas Gialos is its gorgeous beach. This sheltered cove offers decent sand and a gentle sloping entry, making it ideal for families with young children. It can get crowded during peak season, but there are plenty of areas to spread out your towel and relax. There is a taverna on the beach called Fuego, which serves good homestyle Greek food at reasonable prices. There is also a bar on the road opposite the beach that serves snacks and drinks.
After a day of lounging on the beach, you can take a walk through the village center and visit the 17th-century church in the center of town. You can also rent a bike and explore the surrounding countryside. Another option is to take a boat tour of the island’s coastline, which offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
The best time to visit Megas Gialos is during the peak season, from June to August. This is when the weather is warm and sunny, and the beaches are at their most beautiful. However, the shoulder seasons of May and September can be a great time to visit as well. The temperatures are still warm and sunny, but the crowds are much thinner.
5. Akrogiali
A bit of a local secret and not as well-known as it should be, Akrogiali is an absolute gem. It is not your typical taverna; rather it is an upmarket restaurant in a serene setting. The food is excellent (I had the slow cooked lamb and beetroot risotto) and the service is impeccable. It is a real treat and a great place to end your trip to Skiathos.
A short distance above the airport on the way to Vangelistras monastery, one kilometer from the town of Skiathos and on the sea front lies this beautiful taverna. Many years ago, Mrs. Roula set up Agnantio and since then, people come to eat her delicious cooking (lamb in the hull, octopus stew, skopelos pies) and admire the city and airport views from its position on a hilltop.
Located on the waterfront near the old port, this restaurant is always full. The food is superb but what makes it really stand out is the hospitality of Anastasia, who serves as the manager. This is truly a family run business and you can feel the warmth and love for their guests.
The town of Skiathos is dotted with souvlaki shops and fast-food outlets but there are also some good restaurants. In addition, there are a number of cafes where you can enjoy good coffee and cheap food like sandwiches, burgers, cakes and salads. For self-caterers, there are plenty of shops to stock up on provisions.
