The village of Moni is one of the highlights of any trip to Flores. It is home to the Mt Kelimutu crater lakes and traditional Lio villages.
This two-year-old, South of France-style cafe serves grab-and-go and made-to-order breakfasts, plates like hachis parmentier (Shepherd’s pie with rabbit) and showstopping grilled cheese sandwiches. It is a cozy, intimate space and reservations are essential.

3. Mama Yoshi
Located at 17-11 Grove Street and Cypress Avenue in Ridgewood, Mama Yoshi is a Japanese convenience store and counter-service katsu spot. Its menu includes items such as fried chicken and mac and cheese. The restaurant also has a selection of craft beer and cocktails. Its cozy ambiance is perfect for a casual meal or intimate gathering. The staff is friendly and attentive, making sure that every customer feels at home.
Yukiko Muneyasu and Miles Tickler didn’t set out to create some sort of mini-mart empire with their new Ridgewood restaurant. They simply wanted a place where they could serve the kind of food that they’ve been doing in their pop-ups around Queens and Brooklyn since 2017.
Muneyasu, who grew up in San Francisco and is of Jamaican heritage, began her pop-ups as an homage to her mom, Yoshi, and the home cooking she grew up with. Now that they have a permanent space of their own, she’s able to add a few more of her own interpretations of family recipes.
The result is a menu that’s at once familiar and fresh. You can get classics like a spicy katsu sandwich or a vegan version made with cauliflower. And, of course, there’s plenty of rice bowls topped with everything from smoked salmon to flaked seaweed.
The restaurant is open Wednesday through Friday and Saturday from noon to 7pm. The hours are a little short, but it’s still a respectable reason to call in sick from your job and come eat some of the best quick bites in the city. It’s also a great place to stop by after a night out on the town. Just make sure to bring some cash — they don’t accept credit cards.
