Best Beaches in Saria: Palatia, Alimounta & the Wild Coast
Saria isn’t an island of organised resorts and busy beach bars. Its appeal comes from almost exactly the opposite.
Located immediately north of Karpathos in the Dodecanese, Saria offers a rugged coastline, wonderfully clear water and remote beaches reached primarily by boat.
For most visitors, a beach trip to Saria centres on Palatia, while some boat itineraries also visit the more remote Alimounta. Between them lies a wild coastline of cliffs, coves and sea caves that makes the boat journey almost as memorable as the beaches themselves.
Palatia Beach
Palatia is the principal beach destination on Saria and the place most visitors are likely to experience.
Set within a small cove, the beach is surrounded by steep rocky scenery and faces exceptionally clear blue-green water. The shore is predominantly pebbly, and the sheltered setting makes the water inviting for swimming and snorkelling.
Tamarisk trees around the shoreline provide some natural shade, but visitors shouldn’t expect conventional tourist facilities.
The lack of development is a major part of Palatia’s appeal.
Swimming and Snorkelling at Palatia
The clarity of the water makes Palatia particularly attractive for swimming and snorkelling.
A sea cave on the side of the cove provides another feature to explore from the water, although conditions should always be assessed before swimming around rocks or caves.
Because Saria is remote and services are extremely limited, visitors should be more self-sufficient than they would be at an organised beach on Karpathos.
More Than Just a Beach
Palatia is also the gateway to some of Saria’s most interesting sights.
The island’s gorge begins nearby, and walking routes lead towards historic Palatia and Argos as well as small chapels and viewpoints.
This means travellers on the right excursion can combine a morning of hiking and exploring with swimming before returning to Karpathos.
Alimounta Beach
Farther along Saria’s coastline is Alimounta, an even more remote beach.
Some organised boat excursions stop there before returning to Karpathos, although this depends on the itinerary and conditions. Visitors travelling by private boat have more freedom to divide their time between Palatia, Alimounta and other parts of the coast.
Alimounta is best thought of as part of the wider Saria boat-trip experience rather than a conventional beach destination with facilities.
Exploring Saria’s Wild Coast
Limiting Saria to a list of named beaches doesn’t really capture what makes its coastline special.
The journey by sea reveals rocky coves, steep cliffs, sea caves and intensely clear water around a largely undeveloped landscape. Local tourism information specifically highlights the caves and coastal formations between Palatia and Alimounta.
For travellers who love secluded coastal scenery, this is arguably more important than the number of individual beaches.
Are the Beaches Organised?
No. You should visit Saria expecting little or no tourist infrastructure.
Don’t assume you’ll be able to buy lunch, drinks or beach supplies after arriving.
Bring drinking water, sun protection and anything else you need for the day. If your excursion includes hiking, take appropriate footwear as well as your beach equipment.
How to Reach Saria’s Beaches
The normal way to visit Saria is on a boat excursion from neighbouring Karpathos.
Boats operate from Pigadia and Diafani, with Diafani particularly well positioned for excursions from northern Karpathos.
Different excursions offer different itineraries. Some provide more time for swimming, while others allow visitors to hike through Saria before meeting the boat again.
If beaches are your priority, check how much time the itinerary actually gives you at Palatia and whether Alimounta is included.
When to Visit Saria’s Beaches
The main excursion season is May to September.
July and August provide classic summer conditions but are naturally the busiest part of the Greek holiday season.
June and September can be particularly attractive for travellers wanting warm-weather island excursions outside the absolute peak period.
Boat itineraries remain dependent on weather and sea conditions, so plans may need to be flexible.
Palatia or Alimounta?
If you only visit one beach, it will almost certainly be Palatia.
It’s the principal destination, combines swimming with access to Saria’s hiking and historical sites, and is included in many island excursions.
Alimounta is the bonus: more remote and particularly appealing if your boat itinerary includes it.
Together they provide something increasingly difficult to find on famous Greek islands — a beach experience where wild landscape rather than tourist development is the main attraction.

Don’t treat Saria purely as a swimming stop.
Behind Palatia lies an island of gorges, abandoned settlements, medieval remains, chapels, walking trails and protected wildlife.
