Best Beaches in Amorgos

Amorgos is one of the best Greek islands for beach lovers. Kept off the radar of mass tourism, it offers secluded, private beaches like Mourou or Plakes along with charming mountaintop villages and lush hiking paths.

Kalotaritissa is a small sandy beach with magnificent waters on the south-western coast of Amorgos. The beach is situated right below Panagia Hozoviotissa monastery and is easily reachable by car or bus.

Agios Panteleimon

Despite its small size, Amorgos is one of the most dramatic islands in the Cyclades. Stunning beaches and dramatic cliffs jut out of the sea, providing unforgettable views.

The enchanting beach of Agios Panteleimon is the star of many a postcard. The sand and pebbles are a pristine shade of blue, the waters practically pool-like, crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling. It was also the backdrop for the movie “Big Blue.” Located not far from Hora, it is easy to reach on foot in a few minutes.

Kalotaritissa is a fairly long sandy beach situated at the southwestern tip of Amorgos, after Kolofana. The beach is surrounded by a natural sheltered bay, which shelters fishing boats. There is a beach cafe and some sunbeds. Moreover, there is the famous shipwreck of Olympia and a short walk away is the monastery of Moni Panagias Chozoviotissa.

Levrossos Paradise is another beautiful beach that is a bit tricky to get to because it requires hiking over a path but the effort is worth it as this is considered one of the best beaches on Amorgos. It is located close to Aegiali and can be reached by car or by regular boat crossings from Aegiali during the summer season.

Katapola Beach

Katapola is a great base for exploring Amorgos and visiting the neighboring islands. It’s also home to many fantastic hotels and villas, all offering breathtaking views of the azure sea.

There are plenty of things to do in Katapola, from enjoying a meal at one of the town’s authentic local taverns to visiting the awe-inspiring church of Agia Paraskevi. You can also walk around the picturesque town, admiring its narrow labyrinth of streets lined with bougainvillea.

Another great thing to do in Katapola is taking a short boat trip to visit the beaches on the other side of the island. You can check out the stunning beach of Kalotaritissa, which is sheltered from the wind, and the small cove of Plakes Beach. Luc Besson fell in love with this stunning landscape in his movie “Infinite Blue”. You can also see the small shipwreck that’s located at the southern end of the island. It’s a place you should definitely not miss!

Agia Anna Beach

The most famous among the beaches of Amorgos, Agia Anna Beach was the filming location for Luc Besson’s movie “Big Blue”. This rocky and pebbled beach is near Chora, just below the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa. Its crystal clear waters reflect the wild beauty of the rocks on the coast, while you can enjoy the spectacular view of the monastery clinging to the steep hill.

There is one tavern on the beach. However, this is an unorganized beach and it is not recommended for young children. It is an ideal place for diving and snorkeling. In a short walk you can also reach the nearby isolated beaches of Kambi (a nudist spot) and Sirma.

The beach is crowded in high season, but you can always find some quiet spot on the nearby rocky coves. If you want to avoid the crowds, Plakes Beach is a great option, which is more secluded and suitable for nudists.

Aegiali Beach

One of the best beaches in Amorgos, Aegiali is a long sandy beach that attracts crowds during peak summer months. The crystal clear water and shallow bottom make this beach great for families with kids. There are a number of cafes and taverns along the beach where you can grab a bite to eat or get a drink.

Just north of Aegiali is Psili Ammos, a small beach that is covered in coarse sand and pebbles. This is a tranquil beach with some tamarisk trees for shade. You can access it on foot, following the path from Levrossos or through regular boat crossings from Aegiali port that run throughout the day.

Agios Pavlos is another beach in Amorgos that offers a scenic view of the cliffs that tower above it. It is a quiet beach that is also great for snorkeling. Located near the Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery, this is one of the most beautiful beaches in Amorgos.
