Chorio
As beautiful as it is obscure, this tiny Greek Island offers the best of both worlds. Excellent beaches, charming small villages and a rich history make Kimolos an incredible destination for anyone looking for a quiet, utterly relaxing vacation and a true taste of authentic Greek life. Read on for our guide to the best places to stay in Kimolos, including an interactive map and recommendations for hotels and guesthouses for every budget.
The best place to stay in Kimolos is Chorio, the main village of this lovely little island. The town is small, quaint and beautifully decorated in traditional Greek styles. The church in the center of town is one of the most beautiful on the island, and the old castle (kastro) that dominates the town is simply stunning.
There are a few good restaurants in the area, and many of the guesthouses also offer meals. You can get some great local specialties, such as xinomyzithra (a cheese from the islands) and karpouzopita (watermelon pie).
While the beach near Chorio is decent, it is a bit of a walk away from the town. You can still enjoy the views and swim in the crystal clear waters, but the best beach on Kimolos is at Aliki where there are good tavernas and accommodations.
The best time to visit Kimolos is between late spring and early fall. The weather is nice and warm but not too hot. The crowds are much smaller at this time, and you can still find a good deal on accommodation. However, if you are planning to come in July or August, then book your hotel in advance because prices do go up and rooms can actually sell out.
Other options for staying in Kimolos include the port village of Psathi, the beach of Karras and the coastal town of Goupa. Each of these options has its own charms but the best choice will depend on your preferences.
If you have a rental car then your options are even wider as you can drive to other beaches and explore the interior of the island more easily. Taking a tour of the island by boat is another option and this can be done as part of a 3-island trip from Milos or on its own.
As the island is small, most of the key sights can be explored on foot or by bike. It is easy to rent a bike on the island or you can hire a taxi to take you around. The best way to see the island is on a full day tour from either Milos or on one of the 3-island trips that are available. The best part of the tour is seeing Skiadi, the mushroom-shaped volcanic stone that has taken on a magical shape over the years. Seeing this is a must for any visitor to the islands. You can also see the ancient ruins of the city of Kimolos, which are spectacular. Whether you are on a cruise or an island-hopping excursion, the scenery is stunning.
