The best places to stay in Skopelos will depend on your travel style. Do you want to base yourself in a bustling town with bars and restaurants on your doorstep? Then Skopelos Town might be the option for you.
A beautiful hotel close to the port with spotless, quaint double rooms, family suites, and apartments that have kitchenettes (rings, fridges) and furnished balconies with lovely sea or garden views. Breakfast is included.
1. Skopelos Town
Skopelos is an island with gorgeous beaches and picturesque villages. It’s also famous as the “Mamma Mia” island, as it was the main filming location of the popular movie. The island is quiet and peaceful, a great choice for a family or couples holiday.
It’s best to stay in Skopelos Town (Chora) if you want to be close to everything and not have to rent a car. This is a small and charming little town, perfect for walking around and enjoying the beautiful scenery. It’s a lovely place to see the dozens of churches and sit in one of the many tavernas by the sea or in the tiny streets.
This is where you can find the most hotels in Skopelos, and it’s a good idea to book your accommodation well in advance. You’ll find plenty of luxury hotels in Skopelos, as well as self-catered options and budget hotels. For example, Artemis Garden is a gorgeous little guest house on the edge of the town with 2 and 3 bedroom villas in their tranquil gardens. Another great option is Thimisi House, which is a restored cottage in the heart of Skopelos. They offer a few rooms and apartments in their cute house, and they have an excellent interior design.
You’ll find some of the cheapest accommodations in Skopelos here as well, such as the Aggela Guesthouse. They’re in a great position right by the old town and have a fantastic view. They’re also super clean, and the owners are very friendly.
There are some tavernas by the beach, and you can also walk to other beaches in Skopelos, such as Stafilos, Neo Klima, or Agnontas. There are also buses and taxis that can take you to other beaches or to different parts of the island. You can also rent a scooter or ATV to explore the island yourself.
Skopelos is not a party island like Skiathos, but there are some bars where you can enjoy cocktails and music until late at night. You can also visit other nearby islands, including Alonissos and Panormos.
2. Glossa
As the second largest town on the island, Glossa is an excellent base for exploring Skopelos. Its charming old streets are lined with whitewashed houses that cascade down the hills towards the sea and look like they’ve stepped straight out of a postcard. It is also a great choice for those who want to stay somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of Skopelos Town.
There are a good number of hotels and apartments in Glossa, all with lovely views over the sea. The main beach in the town is Stafylos, a beautiful pebbly and sand beach that is very popular with families. Another highlight of the area is the secluded Velanio Beach, which can only be reached by walking along a little woodland trail from Stafylos.
Another option for accommodation in Glossa is Kallisti Seaside Studios, a brand new complex that offers great value rooms with a balcony and sea view. They are situated a short walk from the beach and the centre of town. If you are looking for a small coastal town without too many tourist services then consider staying in Neo Klima or Loutraki. Both are close to Armenopetra and Hovolo beaches and are quieter than Skopelos Town.
If you want to be connected to the island’s ferry network then Skopelos Town is a good shout. You can easily reach the other Sporades islands from here too, including Skiathos, Alonissos and even Volos.
Other options for accommodation on Skopelos include Panormos and Agnontas. Both are near some of the best beaches on the island, but they do get busy during peak season. Panormos is a nice mix of sand and pebbles and is set in a beautiful cove, while Agnontas is more rocky with only a few taverns and a mini market. They are both good choices for those who want to relax and enjoy the beaches. If you are looking for a bit more activity and nightlife then Skiathos may be a better choice. It is home to some of the most stunning sandy beaches in the world and the party scene here is legendary!
3. Loutraki
Skopelos is not a particularly big island, but its landscape is varied with soaring cliffs and sheltered bays. Unlike many Greek islands, Skopelos does not get very crowded even in peak season and there are beaches that you can share with just a few other sunseekers. This means that there is a good selection of hotels and self-catering apartments to choose from. It’s worth considering what kind of environment you want though because where you stay will shape your entire experience. Do you want to be central and have bars, restaurants and shops right on your doorstep? Then Skopelos Town might be your best choice. Or do you want to be away from the crowds and immersed in a quaint inland village? Then you could consider Skopelos Town’s neighbours Glossa and Loutraki.
The hamlet of Mili lies just east of Skopelos town in a peaceful hilltop setting with breathtaking views. There are a handful of apartments and rooms here that feel like a home away from home, with standard amenities including mini-refrigerators and private balconies with garden/bay or sea scenes. This small hotel is a short walk from the town centre and the ferry port.
Just a few steps from the shingle beach at Panormos this lovely little hotel has rooms and suites that are simple, clean and homely with fridges and good-sized balconies with beautiful garden/bay or sea views. Breakfast is included and the hotel has a lovely outdoor terrace where you can enjoy your meals and drinks. A bus stop is nearby for easy access into the town centre.
Located on the hillside overlooking Loutraki harbour this hotel has bright, inviting double and family rooms and two-bedroom maisonettes that have kitchenettes (rings, kettles, mini-fridges) and furnished balconies with fantastic sea views. Upgraded suites add living rooms. There is a large outdoor pool and the harbour area with tavernas is just a short stroll away.
This family-run hotel is set in an olive grove and offers comfortable double and triple rooms that are basic but clean, with fridges and lovely garden/bay/stunning sea views. It’s also just a short walk from the beach at Panormos and there is a bus stop close by. This hotel is ideal for families with young children or couples who are looking for a quiet base on the east side of the island.
4. Agnontas
The quiet village of Agnontas is a great place to stay on Skopelos for its gorgeous beaches and nature. While it is not a partying hub like Skiathos, you can still find some nice bars and tavernas here. It is also well connected with the rest of the island via the small island bus that runs through it several times a day.
The best time to visit Agnontas is during the summer months of June to September when you can enjoy its pristine beaches and vibrant atmosphere. However, this is also the peak season on the island and you may need to book early for your accommodation if visiting at this time.
In terms of accommodation options, there are a number of hotels and apartments in Agnontas. Some of these include Aeolos Hotel, Katikies Stamatias Studios & Maisonettes, and Alimos Beach Apartments. There are also a few self-catering options such as Akri House and the lovely Christine’s House. Alternatively, you can stay high up on the hill at Villea Seaview Apartments and enjoy stunning sea views and a private pool.
There are also plenty of places to eat and drink in the village itself, including three excellent tavernas that serve both traditional Greek food as well as fusion dishes. It is possible to stay in a studio or apartment in Agnontas without spending a fortune, especially if you go for a mid-range option such as Stamatia’s Garden.
In general, I would recommend staying in the town of Skopelos if you want to be near all the action and have plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops at your fingertips. You can easily walk to the best beaches from here and even to other parts of the island in a short time. If you prefer a bit more tranquility, then I would suggest staying in one of the villages or towns on the edge of the island such as Loutraki, Glossa, or Stafylos. All of these are beautiful and quiet places to stay on Skopelos and they will be less crowded than staying in the capital city of Skopelos.
