Kefalonia is home to dozens of gorgeous beaches. These include the picturesque Foki Beach and Emplisi Beach, which sit near Fiskardo. Both are perfect for picnicking all day and relaxing under pine trees.
There’s also the renowned Xi Beach, whose reddish-brown sand looks like it came straight out of a sunscreen commercial. Plus, it has white cliffs that offer a therapeutic mud bath.
1. Myrtos Beach
Myrtos Beach is one of the most breathtaking beaches in Kefalonia and its emerald waters have made it famous all over the world. It’s also a popular destination for snorkeling due to its crystal clear waters. You can enjoy sunbathing on its sandy beaches or simply lay down under the shade of a tree.
The white pebbles and the green cliffs create an extraordinary scenery. It is well-organized and there are sundecks, umbrellas and a snack bar.
It is a bit far from the main town but it’s definitely worth the effort. You can see it in many magazines, postcards and souvenirs. This is because it is a picture-perfect beach and also the business card of the island. It was even filmed in the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
2. Foki Beach
Located in close proximity to the capital of Kefalonia, Argostoli, this beach is one of the most visited beaches in the Island. Glistening sand, crystal clear azure waters and natural surroundings make this beach an ideal place to relax and swim.
This beach is frequented by private yachts and the rich coastal cypress, pine, and olive trees offer some natural shade. The water is clean and there are a few interesting caves to explore along the shoreline.
It can get quite busy here, so we recommend coming early or staying until sunset when it becomes much quieter. This beach is a true paradise that will capture your imagination. Besides swimming, you can also climb up some cliffs to see the views from above. Several tavernas are nearby.
3. Lourdas Beach
The western coast of Kefalonia offers some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Lourdas Beach, a long stretch of fine white sand and crystal clear waters, is one of the most popular beaches on the island. It is well-organized and features sunbeds, umbrellas and a couple of restaurants and beach bars.
If you’re in the area of Fiskardo, don’t miss out on Foki Beach. This flat, forest-shrouded strand was put on the map by the filming of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and is also popular among snorkellers.
The orange sand at Xi Beach isn’t as famous as its kaleidoscope of colors, but it does make for an impressive sight. It’s a good idea to come here for sunset as the light plays with the sand and water in spectacular ways.
4. Emplisi Beach
This gorgeous beach is a favorite with locals and tourists alike. It’s located just north of Fiskardo and is tucked away in a protected bay. Its white pebbles and electric blue waters are breathtaking. Come here for a day of swimming and sunbathing, but make sure you stay until sunset to enjoy the quiet atmosphere and the spectacular scenery.
This beach is a little less crowded than other beaches in the area and offers a unique combination of beautiful scenery and emerald water. The best part is that the cliffs lining this beach are made of white clay, which means you can wet it and rub it all over your skin for a free spa treatment! You can also try one of the taverns here for a bite to eat.
5. Skala Beach
Located in the quaint village of Lourdata, this stunning beach is a sight to behold. Surrounded by green hills and rocky outcrops, this pristine mix of fine white sand and deep blue waters will mesmerize you. It can get crowded during peak season, but there are plenty of more private spots for those who prefer seclusion.
This long stretch of sandy beach has earned a cult following for its gorgeous views and clear waters. The beach is well-organized, and there are sundecks, straw umbrellas, a restaurant, and a water sports center available for those who wish to enjoy some modern comforts. It’s a bit out of the way, but the hike is totally worth it! It’s also a great spot for snorkeling. You might even spot some otters and dolphins!
