A trip to Sphacteria Island is a wonderful day-trip. It offers a spectacular view and a chance to explore the ancient fortress.
After the Battle of Pylos and failed peace negotiations, a number of elite Spartan hoplites were stranded on the island of Sphacteria. The Athenian force of Demosthenes and Cleon attacked and forced them to surrender.

The hotel was in a great location steps from the shops and restaurants of central Sparta, a block from the museum and only a 15-minute walk to the Acropolis. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the A/C worked well. The breakfast was very good and the restaurant was nice as well. We would definitely stay there again!
During the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, the battle of Sphacteria occurred. This was a land battle that took place on the island of Sphacteria (also called Sphagia) and was part of a larger siege that included the nearby fortress of Messina. Although the island of Sphacteria has steep cliffs at its northern end that drop to the water, the rest of the island is flat and features lush vegetation with a few stunted trees. It’s an ideal place for a relaxing day-trip with the opportunity to soak up the sunshine and see some of the most historic sites in Greece.
Sphacteria is a popular choice for hikers looking to experience nature. The area is home to a number of waterfalls such as the Polilimnio and Neda. However, the Kalamris falls are arguably the most beautiful. This spectacular waterfall can be found outside of the village of Giolova and offers some stunning panoramic views. The waters here are incredibly clear and can be seen as far as the eye can see.

This hotel is located in the most beautiful spot of Pefkari Beach and has one of the best sea views on the island. All studios are air-conditioned and feature a balcony with Aegean sea or mountain view, as well as a kitchenette with cooking facilities and fridge.

The battle took place in 425 B.C.E., and it would mark a turning point in the war. After the failure of peace negotiations, the Athenian general Demosthenes attempted to starve out the Spartan hoplites on the island of Sphacteria by blocking off their access to supplies. He was unable to blockade the island tightly enough, and the Athenians were able to bring up reinforcements, including statesman Cleon.
Cleon and the Athenians were able to wear down the Spartans with slings and arrows, and eventually the Spartans surrendered. The defeat marked a major humiliation for the Spartans, and it would lead to the Athenians renegotiating the Peace of Nicias in 421 B.C.E. As a result, the marvelous Nike statue was created and offered in Olympia, commemorating this victory.
