Choosing where to stay in Gavdos is more important than choosing a hotel on many other Greek islands.

Your location can therefore shape your entire stay.

Choose Sarakiniko if you want the easiest combination of beach, tavernas and basic services. Stay around Korfos if you want nature and walking. Choose Kastri for a quieter village atmosphere away from the main beaches.

Best for: staying directly at Sarakiniko Beach

Kiki Gavdos is one of the classic choices for travellers who want to base themselves at Sarakiniko.

The rooms are just metres from the beach, so this is about as convenient as a Gavdos beach holiday gets.

There are different room sizes suitable for solo travellers, couples and families, while a mini-market is also nearby.

The biggest advantage, however, is location.

You can wake up, walk to the beach, find somewhere nearby for lunch and return to your room without needing to organise transport.

For a first visit to Gavdos without a car, Sarakiniko is probably the easiest base on the island, and Kiki Gavdos puts you right in the middle of it.

2. Consolas Gavdos Studios

Best for: self-catering at Sarakiniko

Consolas Gavdos Studios is another strong choice around Sarakiniko.

The studios overlook the bay and provide balconies or terraces, with some accommodation including simple cooking facilities.

That little bit of independence can be particularly valuable on Gavdos.

You may still eat dinner at a taverna every evening, but having somewhere to make breakfast, prepare coffee or keep food and drinks makes a longer stay considerably easier.

Sarakiniko Beach, tavernas and mini-markets are all within walking distance.

For travellers staying several nights without their own vehicle, Consolas is one of the most practical choices.

3. Exoristoi Nature Suites

Best for: more comfortable accommodation at Sarakiniko

Exoristoi Nature Suites provides a more contemporary alternative to Gavdos’s traditional rooms and studios.

The property overlooks Sarakiniko and combines the island’s natural setting with considerably more polished accommodation.

This is worth considering if you love the idea of visiting remote Gavdos but don’t necessarily want your accommodation to feel rustic.

The location also retains Sarakiniko’s major advantage: you can reach the beach and places to eat without spending your holiday constantly arranging transport.

For couples looking for something more comfortable, this would be high on my shortlist.

4. Four Brothers Rooms

Best for: simple accommodation beside the beach

Four Brothers Rooms provides another option directly around Sarakiniko.

The accommodation is associated with the Four Brothers taverna, making it particularly convenient if you want food close to your room.

This is small-scale accommodation rather than a conventional hotel.

That’s typical of Gavdos and part of the appeal.

You’re staying beside one of the island’s best-known beaches, with restaurants and basic facilities close enough that you can manage comfortably without a complicated daily itinerary.

5. Sofia Rooms

Best for: staying near Agios Ioannis

Travellers who specifically want to experience the Agios Ioannis side of Gavdos should consider Sofia Rooms.

Agios Ioannis feels considerably wilder than Sarakiniko.

The magnificent beach, dunes and juniper landscape are the attraction here, and staying nearby gives you much more time to enjoy them than simply arriving for a few hours.

The trade-off is convenience.

You have fewer services around you than at Sarakiniko, so this suits travellers who actively want a quieter and more natural setting.

If waking up close to one of Gavdos’s most beautiful beaches matters more than having numerous tavernas within a few minutes’ walk, Agios Ioannis is an excellent choice.

6. Metochi Gavdos

Best for: nature, hiking and traditional hospitality

Metochi Gavdos is an excellent alternative to staying directly beside the island’s major beaches.

The family-run property lies on the eastern side of Gavdos, around a kilometre from Korfos Beach.

Rooms have private facilities and outdoor space, while some include kitchenettes.

There’s also a traditional restaurant at the property, which is particularly useful given the location.

Metochi works especially well for travellers interested in walking and exploring the island’s interior rather than simply spending every day at Sarakiniko.

Korfos is also the starting point for some of Gavdos’s best walking routes, including the hike towards Cape Tripiti.

7. Gavdos Panorama

Best for: sea views around Korfos

Gavdos Panorama is another particularly attractive choice around Korfos.

The property enjoys an elevated seaside setting, with rooms looking towards the Libyan Sea.

There’s also an on-site restaurant, which removes one of the potential disadvantages of staying away from Gavdos’s main restaurant areas.

This is a good base for travellers who want to combine swimming with hiking.

Korfos is close by, while this side of the island gives you access to walking routes through Gavdos’s rugged southern landscape.

I’d seriously consider Gavdos Panorama for a quiet couples’ stay.

8. Gavdos Princess

Best for: staying in Kastri

Gavdos Princess is one of the established accommodation choices around Kastri, the island’s administrative centre.

The accommodation includes apartments with terraces and kitchen facilities, while there’s also a restaurant on site.

Kastri provides a completely different experience from staying beside Sarakiniko.

You’re in the island’s interior rather than waking up directly beside a major beach.

That makes Gavdos Princess particularly suitable for travellers who want to explore rather than spend every day in the same coastal location.

However, travellers without their own transport should think carefully about how they plan to move around before choosing an inland base.

If you’re happy walking and using whatever seasonal local transport is available, Kastri can be very rewarding.

Kalypso Apartments offers another apartment-style option around the central part of Gavdos.

The attraction here is having your own space rather than relying on a conventional hotel room.

That can make a substantial difference if you’re staying for four or five nights.

Being able to prepare breakfast, store food and spend time outside your room helps make Gavdos feel less like a short hotel stay and more like temporarily living on the island.

Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Gavdos?

For most first-time visitors, I’d choose Sarakiniko.

It offers the easiest combination of:

beach + restaurants + accommodation + basic supplies.

That’s particularly important if you’re visiting without a vehicle.

But Sarakiniko isn’t automatically the best choice for everyone.

Stay in Sarakiniko if…

You want to be beside the beach and walk to restaurants.

Look at Kiki Gavdos, Consolas Gavdos Studios, Exoristoi Nature Suites or Four Brothers Rooms.

Stay near Agios Ioannis if…

You want nature and one of Gavdos’s most memorable beaches.

Consider Sofia Rooms.

Stay around Korfos if…

You want hiking, tranquillity and access to the southern part of the island.

Consider Metochi Gavdos or Gavdos Panorama.

Stay around Kastri if…

You prefer a quiet inland village atmosphere and want to explore different parts of the island.

Look at Gavdos Princess, Villa Kastri or Kalypso Apartments.

Is Sarakiniko the Best Place to Stay Without a Car?

Probably.

Sarakiniko has the greatest concentration of accommodation, tavernas and useful visitor services within walking distance.

You can comfortably spend a day without needing transport at all.

Wake up and walk to the beach.

Return to your room during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Walk to dinner.

That’s a major advantage on an island where distances between settlements can otherwise become significant.

If this is your first Gavdos trip and you’re uncertain about transport, Sarakiniko is the safest choice.

Should You Stay at Korfos?

Korfos makes much more sense for travellers interested in walking.

The southeastern part of Gavdos gives access to trails heading towards Tripiti and Vatsiana, while Korfos itself provides a pleasant beach.

Metochi and Gavdos Panorama also solve one of the main problems with staying somewhere remote: both provide food on site.

I’d choose this area over Sarakiniko if hiking and tranquillity were more important to me than having several restaurants within walking distance.

Should You Stay in Kastri?

Kastri is a good choice if you want to see something beyond Gavdos’s beaches.

It gives you more of a sense of everyday island life and provides a useful central base.

Gavdos Princess is particularly convenient because accommodation and a restaurant are combined.

The downside is obvious: you aren’t waking up immediately beside the sea.

For some travellers that’s irrelevant.

For others, being able to walk out of their room and onto Sarakiniko Beach is the entire reason they’ve come to Gavdos.

Hotel or Apartment?

Gavdos doesn’t really have the conventional resort-hotel culture found on larger Greek islands.

Much of the accommodation consists of rooms, studios and apartments.

That’s actually very well suited to the destination.

For stays longer than a couple of nights, having a fridge or simple kitchen facilities can be extremely useful.

You don’t necessarily need to cook dinner.

Even being able to make breakfast, keep cold drinks and prepare something before a long walk makes life easier.

How Long Should You Stay in Gavdos?

I’d recommend at least three nights.

Four or five would be better if you want to experience the island without rushing.

That gives you enough time for:

Sarakiniko.

Agios Ioannis.

A hike to Tripiti.

The lighthouse.

Korfos.

And at least one day when you don’t really do anything.

That final day may end up being your favourite.

Should You Book Gavdos Accommodation in Advance?

During summer, definitely.

Gavdos doesn’t have an enormous accommodation inventory.

Even though visitor numbers are tiny compared with Crete’s major resorts, there also aren’t thousands of hotel rooms waiting to absorb demand.

July and August deserve particularly early planning.

Outside peak summer you may have more flexibility, but another problem appears: some properties and associated businesses operate seasonally.

Always check that the accommodation you’re considering is actually operating for your dates.

What About Camping in Gavdos?

Gavdos has a long history of informal camping, particularly around some of its remote beaches.

However, visitors should not assume that pitching a tent anywhere they like is automatically permitted simply because other people are doing it.

The island contains environmentally sensitive and protected landscapes, including important coastal dune and juniper habitats.

If you want to camp, check the current rules and designated options before travelling rather than relying on old travel blogs or social-media posts.

Whatever accommodation style you choose, avoid damaging dunes, vegetation or juniper trees.

Do You Need a Car?

Not necessarily, but your accommodation choice becomes much more important without one.

Stay at Sarakiniko and you can walk to beaches, food and basic services.

Stay somewhere isolated and you’ll need to think more carefully about walking distances and transport.

Gavdos does have roads, unlike tiny car-free islands such as Telendos, but don’t approach it like a mainstream destination where taxis and rental vehicles are always immediately available.

Plan before you arrive.

Getting From the Port to Your Accommodation

Most visitors arrive at Karave, Gavdos’s small port.

Your accommodation may be some distance away.

Ask your host about arrival arrangements before travelling.

Some properties can help organise transfers, and seasonal local transport may also operate.

This is particularly important if your ferry arrives with luggage and your accommodation isn’t near Karave.

Don’t wait until you’re standing at the port to start thinking about how you’re getting to the other side of the island.

Staying in Gavdos Without a Vehicle

It can work extremely well.

The key is to resist trying to see everything every day.

Choose a good base.

Walk.

Spend an entire day around one beach.

Take another day for a longer hike.

Use available local transport when appropriate.

Gavdos rewards slow travel much more than rushing between attractions.

Which Gavdos Accommodation Would I Choose?

For a first trip without a car, I’d choose Consolas Gavdos Studios or Kiki Gavdos at Sarakiniko.

For a more comfortable couples’ stay, I’d look at Exoristoi Nature Suites.

For hiking and tranquillity, I’d choose Metochi Gavdos or Gavdos Panorama.

And if I wanted to experience the island away from its beach settlements, I’d consider Gavdos Princess in Kastri.

The best property isn’t necessarily the fanciest.

It’s the one in the right part of Gavdos for the holiday you want.

Final Thoughts

Gavdos accommodation reflects the island itself.

It’s small-scale, independent and scattered through a handful of tiny settlements.

Choose Sarakiniko for the easiest beach holiday.

Choose Agios Ioannis for a wilder experience.

Choose Korfos for walking and nature.

Choose Kastri for an inland island base.

And pay as much attention to the location as you do to photographs of the room.

On Gavdos, being able to walk to dinner, reach the beach or start a hiking trail from your accommodation can be worth far more than another hotel amenity.
