But, be prepared for a bit of an ordeal to enter the cave—you’ll need to hire a water taxi, tip the captain, and wait in a line. But, it’s worth the effort for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The glowing effect is due to sunlight passing through a second, underwater cave mouth that’s underneath the above-water entrance. The light is most intense between noon and 2:00 p.m., so that’s the best time to visit. But, the grotto is still pretty stunning in other lighting.

Visiting the Blue Grotto can be difficult during high winds and rough seas. It’s also closed on December 25 and January 1.

The cave was first used by Emperor Tiberius as a swimming hole over 2,000 years ago, but didn’t become popular until the 19th century. A local fisherman named Angelo Ferraro gave the grotto life again when he brought the painter Ernst Fries and writer August Kopisch to the cave. The service is very professional and the food is excellent. It is also worth trying the Loukoumades – tiny, deep fried doughnuts soaked in honey. We have also enjoyed the grilled octopus and the feta salads.

This is a great place to sit back and relax with a drink while watching the sunset. The views are stunning and the service is friendly. The prices are reasonable. The restaurant also has a sister lounge cafe Carnayo Gold on Mogonissi beach which is a great place to stop for lunch.
