Halki is a small island, and choosing where to stay is considerably simpler than on most Greek islands. Almost all visitors will want to be based in or around Nimborio, the colourful harbour settlement where ferries arrive and most of the island’s restaurants and services are found.

Accommodation is quite different from the large resorts found on Rhodes. Halki has only a small number of conventional hotels, with much of the choice consisting of restored houses, villas, apartments and studios.

That suits the island particularly well. Staying in one of Nimborio’s traditional houses can feel much more appropriate to Halki than staying in a large hotel.

Why Nimborio Is the Best Place to Stay

On a larger Greek island we’d normally compare several towns and resorts.

Halki doesn’t really work that way.

Nimborio is the obvious base for the overwhelming majority of visitors.

Ferries arrive here, most restaurants are here, boat trips depart from the harbour and several beaches can be reached on foot.

Staying in Nimborio also allows you to enjoy the village at its best — early in the morning and in the evening after many visitors from Rhodes have left.

There is little reason to isolate yourself elsewhere unless you’ve deliberately chosen a particular house for its privacy or location.

Should You Stay Overnight or Visit Halki from Rhodes?

Halki can certainly be visited as a day trip from Rhodes, but staying overnight produces a very different experience.

During the day, excursion visitors add activity to Nimborio. Later in the afternoon the village becomes noticeably quieter.

An overnight stay means you can have dinner beside the harbour without watching the clock for a return boat, enjoy an evening walk through the village and start the following morning before day visitors arrive.

If your itinerary allows it, two or three nights is an excellent introduction to Halki.

Travellers looking primarily for swimming, walking and relaxation could comfortably stay longer.

Do You Need a Car?

For most visitors staying around Nimborio, a car is unnecessary.

The settlement is compact and walkable, and beaches including Pondamos and Ftenagia can be reached without having your own vehicle.

Walking routes lead farther into the island, while local transport and boats can help you reach other locations.

This makes Halki particularly attractive if you want a Greek island holiday without organising a rental car.

What Type of Accommodation Is Available?

Halki’s accommodation stock is relatively small and consists predominantly of:

• A limited number of hotel-style properties

Large resorts are not part of the Halki experience.

For families and groups, renting an entire house can make considerably more sense than booking several rooms.

When Should You Book?

Halki has much less accommodation than neighbouring Rhodes.

That means the properties with the best locations can have limited availability during July and August, even though the island itself doesn’t experience tourism on the scale of Rhodes.

Book earlier if you have your heart set on a particular traditional house or waterfront property.

May, June, September and early October can be excellent alternatives for visitors seeking quieter conditions.

Outside the main tourism season, check availability carefully because some accommodation and visitor services operate seasonally.
