Choosing where to stay in Kastellorizo is refreshingly simple.
This is a tiny island with one main settlement wrapped around its beautiful natural harbour. Unlike larger Greek islands, you don’t need to spend hours deciding between different resorts or towns.
For most visitors, the main decision is whether you want to stay directly around the harbour, somewhere slightly quieter towards Mandraki, or in one of the island’s traditional apartments and guesthouses.
Despite Kastellorizo’s small size, there is a surprisingly good selection of accommodation, ranging from stylish waterfront hotels to traditional rooms and apartments.

Megisti Hotel is probably the most obvious choice for travellers wanting a conventional hotel experience without losing Kastellorizo’s small-island atmosphere.
The hotel sits at the edge of the main harbour, only a short walk from the restaurants and main square.
Its own current information lists 15 rooms and four suites, all with sea views. The property also has a large waterside terrace with direct access for swimming and snorkelling.
That last feature is particularly valuable on Kastellorizo.
Because the island doesn’t have conventional sandy beaches, being able to walk from your accommodation directly into clear water is a genuine advantage rather than merely a hotel amenity.

Kastellorizo Hotel occupies five traditional buildings at the quieter end of the harbour.
According to the hotel’s current information, the buildings have been designed to fit the island’s traditional architecture, with rooms overlooking the harbour and the sea only metres away.
This is a particularly good location for a first visit.
You can walk to restaurants and cafés, explore the settlement without transport and return to your room during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Then in the evening, simply walk back out onto the harbour.

This is important because the old version of our article had somehow combined the real Poseidon Hotel with accommodation information from completely different Mediterranean destinations.
We don’t need any of that.
Poseidon is a legitimate Kastellorizo accommodation option and one of the island’s better-known places to stay.
For travellers comparing the main hotels, I’d put it on the shortlist alongside Megisti Hotel and Kastellorizo Hotel.

Karnayo is particularly interesting if you’d prefer an apartment or room rather than a conventional hotel.
Its accommodation combines traditional architectural elements with modern interiors, using materials such as stone, wood and marble.
Current Booking information places it about a five-minute walk from Megisti Port, making it convenient without requiring you to stay directly on the waterfront.
Apartment-style accommodation can make a lot of sense on Kastellorizo if you’re staying for several days.
You gain a little more independence while remaining within walking distance of virtually everything you’ll need.

Mediterraneo is another established property currently recognised by the Municipality of Megisti.
It provides another alternative for travellers who want something smaller and more intimate than a conventional resort hotel.
And that really suits Kastellorizo.
Large-scale resort accommodation would feel strangely out of place here. Part of the attraction of staying on the island is feeling connected to the settlement rather than enclosed within a self-contained resort.

Mandraki Paradise offers something slightly different because it is associated with the Mandraki side of Kastellorizo rather than positioning you directly amid the main harbour activity.
It’s also included in the municipality’s current accommodation directory.
Kastellorizo is hardly a noisy island to begin with, but this can appeal to visitors who prefer being a little removed from the waterfront restaurants and cafés.
You can still explore the island easily because distances are so small.

Agnanti is another long-established accommodation option appearing in the municipality’s current directory.
This is the type of property worth comparing if your priority is having a comfortable base rather than extensive hotel facilities.
On Kastellorizo, that approach makes sense.
You’ll probably spend much of your time outside anyway — walking, swimming, taking boat trips, eating around the harbour or exploring the island.

There are considerably more choices than you might expect.

I wouldn’t turn this article into a directory containing 20 near-identical descriptions.

Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Kastellorizo?
For a first visit, I’d choose the main harbour area.
It’s the easiest location for:
restaurants,
cafés,
boat trips,
ferry arrivals,
sightseeing,
evening walks
and swimming.
You can walk almost everywhere you’re likely to need during an ordinary short stay.
There’s also something special about waking up and stepping outside onto Kastellorizo’s waterfront.
Should You Stay in Mandraki?
Mandraki is worth considering if you’d prefer somewhere quieter.
Because Kastellorizo is so compact, choosing Mandraki doesn’t isolate you in the way that staying in a remote village might on Crete or Rhodes.
You can still reach the main settlement without turning every dinner into a transport exercise.
For a longer stay, I’d seriously consider it.
Do You Need a Car?
For most visitors, no.
This is one of Kastellorizo’s advantages.
Stay around the settlement and you can walk to restaurants, cafés, historic sights and boat departures.
For places farther into the island, walking or locally available transport will usually make more sense than hiring a car solely for a short visit.
Hotel or Apartment?
For 2–3 nights, I’d probably choose a hotel.
For 4 nights or longer, apartments become increasingly attractive.
A hotel provides convenience, particularly if you’re arriving by ferry and simply want to settle in.
An apartment gives you more independence and can be useful if you want a refrigerator, additional living space or somewhere comfortable to spend a quiet afternoon.
Neither is inherently better.
It depends on how you’re travelling.
Best Place to Stay for Swimming
I’d look particularly closely at Megisti Hotel.
The property specifically promotes its waterside terrace and direct swimming and snorkelling access.
On another Greek island, I’d consider that a pleasant bonus.
On Kastellorizo, where swimming frequently means entering the sea from rocks and platforms rather than walking onto a sandy beach, it’s considerably more useful.
Best Place to Stay Without a Car
Almost anywhere around the harbour.
Megisti Hotel, Kastellorizo Hotel, Poseidon and Karnayo are all sensible properties to investigate.
The important thing isn’t being within 50 metres of every attraction.
Kastellorizo itself is sufficiently compact that staying within the main settlement largely removes the transport problem.
Best Place to Stay for Couples
I’d shortlist:
Megisti Hotel for sea views and direct swimming,
Kastellorizo Hotel for its harbour setting,
or Karnayo for something more traditional and independent.
Your choice comes down to whether you’d prefer hotel service or apartment-style accommodation.
Best Place to Stay for Families
I’d lean towards an apartment.
Having additional space and some independence can be useful when travelling with children.
Karnayo currently offers family rooms, while Kastellorizo has numerous other apartments and studios worth comparing for the dates of your visit.
Is There Luxury Accommodation in Kastellorizo?
Yes, but don’t expect the enormous luxury-resort complexes found on some of Greece’s major islands.
Megisti Hotel sits towards the more upmarket end of Kastellorizo accommodation, offering larger suites as well as conventional sea-view rooms.
But I’d argue that Kastellorizo’s real luxury is its location.
A harbour view.
Clear water outside.
Dinner within walking distance.
No traffic jam.
No enormous resort complex separating you from the island.
That’s a much better fit for Kastellorizo.
How Early Should You Book?
For July and August, book well ahead.
Kastellorizo has more accommodation than its size initially suggests, but it still has a very limited number of beds compared with major Greek destinations.
Small islands can fill surprisingly quickly because it doesn’t take enormous visitor numbers to absorb the available accommodation.
June and September usually provide more flexibility, but I’d still secure accommodation before arranging the rest of a Kastellorizo itinerary.
How Many Nights Should You Stay?
I’d still recommend 3–4 nights.
That gives you time for:
Day 1: Harbour, castle and museums
Day 2: Blue Cave and swimming
Day 3: Palaiokastro and walking
Day 4: Boat trip, Ro or another relaxed day
Most importantly, it gives you flexibility if weather or sea conditions interfere with the Blue Cave excursion.
Kastellorizo isn’t a destination I’d rush.
Can You Visit Without Staying Overnight?
Yes, but staying is considerably better.
Once you’re overnighting on Kastellorizo, you get the harbour in the early morning and evening rather than experiencing the island solely according to transport schedules.
You also have time to stop treating the sights as a checklist.
That’s when Kastellorizo begins to make sense.
Final Thoughts
For most first-time visitors, I’d stay around Kastellorizo’s main harbour.
Choose Megisti Hotel if direct swimming and a more polished hotel experience appeal.
Choose Kastellorizo Hotel for a traditional harbour setting.
Consider Poseidon as another established hotel option.
Look at Karnayo if you’d prefer traditional apartment-style accommodation.
And consider Mandraki Paradise if you’d like somewhere a little quieter.
Most importantly, don’t overcomplicate the decision.
Kastellorizo is tiny.
Choose good accommodation, stay three or four nights and spend your time enjoying the island rather than worrying whether you’ve selected the perfect neighbourhood.
