Choosing where to stay in Kythnos makes a noticeable difference to your trip. Accommodation is spread between the port, traditional inland villages and several small coastal settlements rather than concentrated in one resort.

Martinakia Beach is close to the settlement, while Episkopi and Apokrousi are farther north along the western coast.
Merichas is particularly useful for a short visit or when you have an early departing ferry.
EmGard Suites

Accommodation choices are more limited than around Merichas or Loutra, but that’s part of the appeal.
Dryopida makes sense for travellers who value village atmosphere and don’t need to walk out of their accommodation directly onto a beach.

It is worth considering if you like the idea of staying in the island’s traditional interior rather than one of its coastal settlements.

For most first-time visitors, we’d choose Chora if restaurants and evening atmosphere are important.
Choose Merichas if ferry convenience and easy access to the western side of the island matter most.
Choose Loutra for a small seaside village with restaurants, beaches and the thermal springs nearby.
Choose Kanala for a peaceful coastal holiday, particularly if you’re travelling as a couple.
Choose Dryopida if traditional village character is more important to you than being beside the sea.
For a villa holiday or a longer stay, one of the smaller beach areas can provide much more privacy.
Do You Need a Car in Kythnos?
You can visit Kythnos without renting a car, particularly if you stay in one of the principal settlements and plan your trip around local transport and taxis.
However, a vehicle makes the island considerably easier to explore.
This is especially true if you want to visit several beaches, archaeological sites and more remote parts of the island. Some accommodation is also well away from the main settlements.
If you’re choosing a secluded villa primarily for its views, check its location carefully before booking.
How Long Should You Stay in Kythnos?
A three-night stay gives you enough time to see the main villages and several beaches.
Four or five nights is better if you’d like to explore at a slower pace, visit archaeological sites, walk some of the island’s trails and spend full days at different beaches.
For a very short stay, Merichas can be particularly convenient because you lose little time transferring to and from the ferry.
Booking Accommodation in Kythnos
Kythnos has fewer large hotels than the major Cycladic islands. Much of its accommodation consists of small hotels, suites, studios, apartments and villas.
For July and August, booking well ahead is sensible, particularly if you want a specific property or location.
Outside the peak summer period, remember that Kythnos is seasonal. Check that the accommodation and nearby services you want will be operating for your dates.
